Britta Steffen
Britta Steffen was born in 1983 as the second of three children in Schwedt. When she was six years old, she started swimming. At the age of 12, in order to get the best conditions for training at Sportschule “Friedrich Ludwig Jahn” she moved to Potsdam. In 2002 she moved to Berlin to train with Franziska van Almsick, where she is still living.
In 1999 she won six titles at the European Junior Champion-ships, and won a bronce medal as a member of Germany’s free-style relay team at the Olympic Games in 2000. In 2004, shewas nominated to swim the 4 x 100m relay. But in Athen shegot injured and couldn’t start for the finals. After the Olympics, she took one year off swimming and concentrated on her studies. She is a student of Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen, main focusenvironment and sustainability.
During the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing Britta won the 100m freestyle, catching the world record holder Libby Tricket at thelast stroke. At the same event she won the gold medal about 50m freestyle.
